Listed below are the Science and Design Technology resources currently available. All of the products are designed and made by hand in Sunderland UK and have been tried and tested with teachers and groups of children in Primary and Secondary schools as appropriate. The kits are for use with individual pupils, small groups or whole classes. All kits have detailed documentation.

Electricity kit in plastic case
Contains battery, wires, bulb, buzzer, and switch - all of the basic components needed to make simple circuits. The foam backing allows neat layout of the circuits so it’s easy to see what is right or wrong. In addition there are some wires, paper clips, paper fasteners and materials to design and make simple switches and investigate conductors and insulators. Details of a fun Morse code exercise also included. Excellent for use with the materials kit above. Easy to use, store and maintain.

Structures investigation kit
All of the materials and equipment needed to make paper roll tube structures such as bridges, towers and cranes. Excellent link with ‘D and T’. The structures or individual members can be tested and the bending strength and strength to weight ratio can be calculated. Students can investigate the strength of a structure in relation to the quantity of material used to make it and therefore work out the cost or cost benefit of a particular design of bridge.

Makes 30 moving monsters powered by air. Plastic milk cartons (not supplied) are used as the reservoir of air which is forced into a balloon and makes a lever move up and down. A monster, creature or part of a scene is built onto the lever hence creating motion when air is supplied. Card monster template included.

Note regarding the D and T project kits

The idea behind the approach to designing and making a product is to get the pupils started by following instructions which result in a basic working model eg. a light bulb which switches on. Then challenge the pupils to evaluate what they have made and design a completely different model or improve the basic design. In this way the more able can have the freedom to take things a lot further and the less able have a working product with maybe a small additional design improvement which they have been helped with. The projects provide a reliable starting point from which true designing and making is then possible. Of course you may just wish to give the pupils an exercise in which following instructions and acquiring basic practical skills or knowledge of a particular aspect of science or DT is the aim. In this case the projects are ideal since each has a powerpoint presentation with close up photographs of all stages to follow. The presentation can then be cut down and blanks left where pupils put in their own instructions. This has proved very successful.
